At the time by gone Ratnapura ford was located in the Valley of Kalu River beside the Varakathota old route. A wooden bridge that escalated the antiquity of the complex was there to cross to approach the edifice. Meanwhile, Dutch have been searching for a location to construct a fortress due to the upcoming conflicts between Sinhala and Dutch people. For the moment Dutch have used an edifice planned by Portuguese in the central town.
This fortress which draws parallel to the Dutch fortress in Kaluthara has been constructed in a highland right at the center of the town. This citadel constitutes of 4 defensive-openings (Ukusugul) and two main openings. The place is spacious enough for 40 soldiers to camp easily.
